Inscription:二零二二年仿宋人构图法写雪后寒林 – Titled “Winter Forest After Snow” Brushed in 2022, in the manner of Song painters’ composition
--
This painting announces its lineage in the inscription — composed in the manner of Song dynasty masters, whose approach to winter landscapes set a standard that has endured for a thousand years. The result is a work of considered restraint, where the absence of color is not a limitation but a deliberate act of focus.
Snow here is rendered almost entirely through what the brush does not touch. Bare branches carry their white weight in the spaces left by ink, while a river runs dark and still through the lower half — the one element the snow cannot claim. A mountain surges upward through swirling mist, its mass suggested more by atmosphere than by line.
Fine, intricate marks build the tangled winter branches with painstaking care, while broad, soft washes handle the mountain and mist above — two entirely different hands working in quiet conversation, together stripping the landscape to nothing but cold, stillness, and the patience of bare trees.
