Titled as “Clear Mist on Layered Peaks,” painted from memory of Andes Mountains in South America, completed in Southern California

--

The Andes, recalled from memory and set down in ink on a California afternoon. That distance — geographic, temporal — lends the painting a quality of distillation. What survives the journey from experience to brushstroke is only what truly mattered: the sheer verticality of the peaks, the way mist moves between them, and the humbling scale of it all.

A river winds through the valley in thin, pale strokes before gathering itself and cascading down as a waterfall in the lower left — the painting's one moment of audible motion in an otherwise silent landscape.

Rough, dragged strokes texture the cliff faces with geological weight, while the foreground trees are built from short, decisive marks. Mist is handled with restraint — ink diluted to near transparency, the mountains dissolving as memory itself does, gradually and without clear edges.
