- In April 2021, Study of tree-painting techniques of Song Dynasty master, Guo Xi (1020 - 1090) with a lot of gains, especially cherishing his masterful rendering of branches.

--

Guo Xi believed that a painter must understand trees as deeply as a person understands a close friend — their posture in wind, their structure in winter, the particular way each species reaches toward light. This work, a direct study of his branch-painting methods, takes that lesson seriously.

The ancient tree at the center is the painting's entire reason for being. Its trunk twists with dramatic, coiling energy, rendered in bold, wet strokes that give the bark its gnarled, living weight. From there, branches extend in Guo Xi's signature manner — crab-claw formations reaching and curling with expressive tension, each tip finding its own direction — rocks below handled in broad, sweeping strokes while mist and distant mountains dissolve into soft washes behind, everything in the composition existing solely to serve the tree and the devotion with which it has been studied.
