- Painted with influence of Shi Tao (1642-1707)

--

Shi Tao — monk, painter, and one of the most original voices in Chinese art history — famously declared that painting should follow no fixed method, that the single brushstroke contains all things. This work absorbs that spirit fully. There is nothing rigid here, nothing formulaic — only a landscape that feels discovered rather than constructed.

A waterfall surges through the center with raw, unrestrained force, its white cascade rendered in bold, confident strokes that leave nothing tentative. Around it, pines and mixed foliage press in from all sides — layered, varied, and alive — with touches of muted pink and amber breaking the deep greens with quiet insistence. Above, the mountain rises in warm ochre washes, its surface textured with loose, expressive marks that follow no single system, mist softening the transitions throughout and lending the whole composition a quality of things still forming.
