A fisherman follows the river, enchanted by spring's blossoms, Peach trees line both banks along the ancient ford. He watches red branches pass, forgetting how far he has come, Walking the green stream to its end, not a soul in sight.
At the mountain's mouth he slips into a hidden passage, Then the peaks open wide onto a sunlit plain. Far off, a grove of clouds and trees draws his gaze, Closer now — a thousand homes amid scattered flowers and bamboo.
Woodcutters still carry names from the Han dynasty, The villagers wear the robes of Qin. Together they dwell in this Wuling source, A world apart, where fields and gardens rise beyond time.
Moonlit pines stand silent over quiet chambers, At sunrise, dogs and roosters fill the clouds with sound. Word spreads — a stranger has arrived — And all come forth, asking eagerly of the world outside.
At dawn, the village lanes are swept clean of fallen petals, At dusk, fishermen and woodcutters return by water. Once they fled the mortal world to find this refuge, And having become like immortals, never wished to leave.
Who beyond these gorges knows that people live here? From the outside world, one sees only empty cloud-wrapped peaks. The fisherman doubts not that such sacred ground is hard to find, Yet his heart, still worldly, aches for home.
Leaving the cave, mountains and rivers stretch between, He parts from those people, intending one day to return. He tells himself he remembers the way well enough — How was he to know the peaks and valleys would rearrange themselves?
When he entered, he only thought of going deeper, Following the green stream through its countless bends into the cloud forest. Now spring has come again and the peach blossom waters flow everywhere — But which stream leads to the immortal source? He cannot tell.
