Fan Kuan is among the most towering figures in Chinese landscape painting — his monumental compositions, where mountains fill the picture plane with overwhelming vertical presence, set a standard that has endured for a thousand years. This work takes that compositional inheritance and breathes Yuan dynasty brushwork into it, honoring both traditions while standing firmly on its own.

The mountain rises and rises, consuming nearly the entire upper half with quiet, crushing authority. A waterfall descends its right face in a single unbroken line — thin, dark, and deliberate. Mist fills the middle ground completely, creating a suspended emptiness between the drama above and the detailed foreground below, where rocks, trees, and foliage are rendered in fine, precise marks — each leaf cluster and stone surface given individual attention through careful, unhurried brushwork deeply rooted in the Yuan literati tradition.
