葛鸣 – Titled “Huangshan Morning Glow” From Memory: Painted scenery of the soaring Beihai peaks in Yellow Mountain range in July 2022. By Ge Ming

--

Huangshan — the Yellow Mountain — has inspired Chinese painters for centuries, its granite peaks, twisted pines, and shifting seas of cloud considered the ultimate expression of the natural sublime. This painting, drawn from memory of the Beihai peaks, carries that tradition forward with confidence and deep familiarity.

The composition is dense with presence. Dozens of jagged spires press upward through swirling mist, their warm ochre faces catching the morning light against cool gray shadow. The pines in the foreground are the painting's anchor — ancient, gnarled, and utterly unhurried, their twisted trunks rendered in long, winding lines while their canopies are built from layered, overlapping strokes that pulse with dark energy.

Mist does much of the work here, separating foreground from middle ground, peak from sky, the known from the unknown — handled in broad, wet washes that dissolve the mountain edges with quiet authority, ten thousand peaks emerging from cloud as if the world were still being made.
