Titled: “Picture of Dawn Mist Clearing”
Glacier National Park lies in Montana, straddling the border between the United States and Canada. Now over a century old, the park is vast in size and remarkable in the diversity of its plant and animal life. Though most of its glaciers have melted or receded over the years, its beautiful mountains, lakes, streams, and waterfalls continue to enchant all who visit, making it difficult to leave.
I passed through for a brief visit several years ago and was deeply moved. This past summer I returned for nine days — and still felt it was far too short. Back home these past months, I have found myself frequently returning to those scenes in memory.
Recently, stealing a moment of leisure, I took up my brush and loosely painted this picture of dawn mist clearing, capturing the scenery of the many glacial areas within the park.
Recorded in October 2021.

The mist is the painting's true subject. It moves through the composition in broad, luminous washes of pale green and gray, swallowing the forest at mid-ground and separating the warm ochre peaks above from the still water below. A waterfall descends through the center, white and unhurried, the one fixed point in a landscape otherwise in motion.
In the foreground, gnarled trees lean with easy confidence, their twisted trunks rendered in long, sinuous lines while dark conifers rise in dense, layered strokes behind them. Near and far, revealed and concealed — the mist decides what the eye is allowed to see.
