Autumn here is not a season so much as a sound — the rush of water through rock, the restless movement of leaves that haven't yet decided to fall. Painted along the California coastline, the work carries that particular energy of a season in full momentum rather than decline.

A waterfall dominates the composition, splitting into two cascades — one thundering from above, one surging from below — as if the mountain itself cannot contain what the season has set in motion. Red maples press in from both sides, vivid and insistent against the cool gray of the cliff face and the deep green of the pines.

The brushwork is at its most dynamic here. Twisted tree trunks are rendered in long, winding lines that coil with restless energy, while the foliage is built from dense, overlapping strokes that pulse with movement. The waterfall, by contrast, is left almost bare — white paper doing the work of rushing water.

The mountain speaks. Autumn answers.

秋声

秋，于此画中，与其说是季节，不如说是一种声音——水流穿石之声，未决飘落的叶片扰动之声。此作写于加州海滨，满溢秋日盛时之气，非衰颓之景，而是生机勃发之象。

瀑布雄踞画面中心，分作两叠——上瀑轰然倾泻，下瀑汹涌奔腾——仿佛山体难以承纳这季节所激发的磅礴之势。红枫从两侧逼入，鲜烈而执着，与崖壁的冷灰、松林的深绿形成强烈对照。

笔法于此作中最为奔放。盘曲的树干以长线蜿蜒勾就，充满张力；枝叶以密集交叠的笔触层层堆积，动感涌动。瀑布处则反其道而行——几近留白，以纸之本色代水之奔流。

山有所言，秋以应答。
