Calligraphy (Semi-Cursive Script) of poem titled “An Unexpected Trip to Peach Blossom Spring” written by Wang Wei (699-761) in Tang Dynasty

--

A fisherman follows the river, charmed by the mountain's spring, Peach blossoms line both banks along the ancient crossing. He watches red branches drift past, forgetting the miles, Walking the green stream to its end — not a soul in sight.

At the mountain's mouth he slips into a hidden passage, Then the peaks part wide onto a sunlit open plain. Far off, a cluster of trees gathers like clouds — Closer now: a thousand homes amid flowers and bamboo.

Woodcutters still carry names from the Han dynasty, The villagers wear robes unchanged since the age of Qin. Together they dwell beside this hidden Wuling source, A world set apart, where fields bloom beyond all time.

Moonlit pines stand silent over quiet chambers at night, At sunrise, dogs and roosters fill the mist with sound. Word spreads that a stranger has appeared among them — All come forth, pulling him homeward, asking of the world outside.

At dawn the village lanes are swept clean of fallen petals, At dusk, fishermen and woodcutters return by water. They first fled the mortal world to find this refuge, And having found it, became like immortals — never wishing to leave.

Who beyond these gorges knows that people live here? From the outside world, one sees only empty cloud-wrapped peaks. The fisherman does not doubt such sacred ground is hard to find, Yet his heart, still worldly, quietly aches for home.

Leaving the cave, mountains and rivers stretch between — He parts from those people, intending one day to return. He tells himself he remembers the path well enough — How could he know the peaks and valleys would rearrange themselves?

When he entered, he only thought of going deeper, Following the green stream through its bends into the cloud forest. Now spring has returned and peach blossom waters flow everywhere — Which stream leads to the immortal source? He cannot tell.
